  1. Hinge Pin Blocks are Reason Enough... 5 Star Review

Posted by on 25th Mar 2013

There are very few downfalls to the stock TC6.1 chassis: The weird steering system, the tiny little idler shaft that runs through the spur gear, and worst of all--The hinge pin blocks. Now I'm not a complete beginner, but I do find myself clipping the wall once or twice in a day of racing. It's nice to have a design that's strong enough to take such abuse while maintaining its form.

Setting aside the issue of strength, the hinge pins are able to operate more freely, using a metal-on-metal connection point, rather than the stock AE metal-on-plastic method. All it took before was a little bump, and the stock bulkhead-mounted hinge pin block would twist slightly, binding up the whole system. Once, I even lost the hinge pin completely when I was pushed into the wall, with the plastic block rotated up and the wheel/arm assembly being held on solely by the upper link. The Exotek chassis provides a nearly-frictionless connection directly to the chassis. It's really the best way to go.

While I don't have the engineering degree to tell you why, the dual bell-crank steering system (sold separately) has for sure improved my driving. Being that you can only install it on this chassis conversion kit is yet another reason to get it. Be careful though, as last week one of the screws backed out during practice and the system came apart. I guess I should have put a dot of Loc-Tite on it (or at least nut-and-bolt'd the car before running it). Anyway, the car only turned left. I felt like Jeff Gordon.

Also cool are the carbon fiber battery locator braces. I felt that they were a little low enough to the chassis that they weren't holding the rounded corners of the battery very well, so I put a couple of rubber washers in between the braces and the chassis to lift them up the ends of the battery and they do a great job now.

I am, to this day, very impressed with this kit. I thought for sure that there'd be something off with it (like a mis-drilled hole or non-precise workmanship), but I was wrong. The kit is really nearly-perfect. I've had my kit for about half a year now, and I can only find two faults to it:

A, the pinion gear set screw is a little hard to get to from the underside of the chassis (you wouldn't think so from looking at it, but to make the pinion line up with the spur it has to be pushed onto the motor shaft past the point where the 1.5 mm wrench would make a straight shot to the set screw).

B, all the mounting holes on the chassis are countersunk a little too deeply, or at least not at the same angle as the heads of the screws that came with the TC6.1 kit originally. It's not so bad that it'd matter, but from an aesthetic standpoint, it looks a little... off.

I wholeheartedly recommend this kit to anyone interested in upgrading their car--That is, unless we're competing against each other... in which case, stay with what you got and may the best car win.

  2. tc6tek test 5 Star Review

No problem at all to assemble the kit, first test on the track with set up suggested by Exotek and the feeling was no so bed, fine adjustment to be performed. However very good impression.
